Emergency First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

This unit has two modes of delivery:

It can be run as a blended course with prior learning to be done with 4 hour face-to-face component to follow

or

Full face to face where 8 hours should be allowed

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.

This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

This unit of Competency has been approved by ACECQA and meets the required Knowledge and Skills for First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis, and contributes towards the approved and accredited training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulation (2011).

Successful completion of this course, provides trainees with the knowledge and skills to be able to provide first aid response to infants and children, who are in an education and care setting, including Pre-Schools, Childcare Centre’s, Schools, and OOSH Centres.

For this unit, there are both written and practical tasks to complete.

A brief overview of the practical tasks are:

  • Managing the unconscious non breathing adult including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manakin placed on the floor with rescue ventilations
  • Managing the breathing unconscious casualty
  • Managing the unconscious non-breathing child including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an child manakin placed on a firm surface with rescue ventilations
  • Managing the unconscious non-breathing infant including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant manakin placed on a firm surface with rescue ventilations
  • Managed casualties with:
    • anaphylaxis
    • asthma
    • non-life-threatening bleeding
    • choking – child and infant
    • envenomation, using pressure immobilisation
    • fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, using appropriate immobilisation techniques
    • minor wound cleaning and dressing
    • nosebleed
    • shock
  • Responding to at least one simulated incident with no knowledge of the casualty’s condition.

The written tasks are to complete an incident report and complete a knowledge assessment.

Training is also delivered in a simulated environment or at your workplace (Minimum numbers are required, please see our company booking form to book)

Third Party Providers

We also have many third party providers in which case training and assessment is delivered on behalf of H & A Training RTO 90871. If completing a course through a third party provider, please arrange and contact the third party in this case.

Literacy and numeracy skills needed to complete this course should be high enough that each student is able to individually read, write understand and communicate in basic English.

Trainees with special needs either physical difficulties or literacy difficulties, should contact our office prior to enrolling so that assistance can be arranged for you.

Students will be notified by H & A Training RTO 90871 in the event that there are any changes to the provider or unit/s the student is enrolled in.

Students do not need to bring any learning materials or resources with them to complete this course.

This unit supersedes and is not equivalent to HLTAID004  Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting
